Web of Science(TM)
ISI Citation Databases - A Sitewide
Solution

The Web of Science is the powerful Web interface
providing access to the Science Citation Index Expanded(TM), Social Sciences Citation
Index, Arts & Humanities
Citation Index, and the new Web of Science Corporate Editions:
BioSciences Citation Index(SM), Chem
Sciences Citation Index(SM), and Clinical
Medicine Citation Index(SM).
Designed exclusively by the Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI) for its proprietary citation databases, the Web
of Science provides researchers the navigational and retrieval functions only
possible through the powerful combination of citation indexing and enabling Web
technology.
The
ISI Citation Databases
The ISI Citation Databases collectively index more than
8,400 high quality, peer-reviewed journals cover-to-cover, providing users with complete
bibliographic data, searchable author abstracts when available in the science and social
sciences source material, and cited references from the world's most influential journals:
- The Science Citation Index
Expanded fully covers over 5,600 journals (approximately 2,000 more titles than
the print or CD-ROM version) and is updated with 16,000 new records every week.
- The Social Sciences Citation
Index fully covers 1,700 journals and is updated with 2,900 new records every
week. Also selectively covers relevant items from over 5,600 leading science and social
sciences journals.
- The Arts & Humanities
Citation Index fully covers over 1,140 journals and is updated with 2,700 new
records every week. Also selectively covers relevant items from over 7,000 leading science
and social sciences journals.
Through the Web of Science, these
multidisciplinary databases are available independently or in any combination. User will
be able to perform current and retrospective searches of the files using standard
graphical web browsers such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Web
of Science Corporate Editions
The Web of Science Corporate Editions are the
best source of bibliographic information for researchers working in the biopharmaceutical
and chemical industries. This targeted series of scientific and technical citation
databases allows researchers to conduct in-depth literature searches at their own
desktops. Updated weekly, Corporate Editions help researchers discover answers
and probe issues that are relevant to their industry and particular field of study.
Each edition covers a concentrated group of scientific
disciplines, providing the most comprehensive journal coverage in a focused area. The
databases are available in five and ten-year rolling files, with combined coverage of over
2,800 journals. The three, corporate-focused citation indexes are:
- The BioSciences Citation Index covering more than
900 journals in the life sciences, with particular emphasis on the molecular and cellular
levels.
- The Chem Sciences Citation Index covering over 650
journals in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, toxicology, and more.
- The Clinical Medicine Citation Index covering over
2,000 journals in clinical research.
Through the Web of Science, these
multidisciplinary databases are available independently or in any combination. Users will
be able to perform current and retrospective searches of the files using standard
graphical Web browsers such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Web
of Science Features and Benefits
The Web of Science offers:
- Enhanced cited reference searching
The Web of Science offers the ideal medium to date for taking advantage of cited
reference searching - the dynamic feature developed by ISI which allows researchers to
search citation data (the footnotes of each article), taking a known, relevant paper or
work and finding other, more recent papers that cite it.
The Web of Science enhances the power of cited reference searching by allowing
researchers to:
- navigate forward, backward, and through the research
literature
- link to original article information when a cited reference
of interest is found (for original articles covered by the database)
- locate all cited authors, not just first authors, for
articles in the database
- track "times cited" information for articles on a
weekly basis through automatic updates
- find relevant items which share one or more cited
references, through the Related Records function
- hotlink to first and subsequent generation articles using
prior research
- discover key papers by ranking found items by "times
cited"
- Flexible searching and sorting options
Customized search options allow researchers to search one or multiple citation databases,
to select a specific time period for searching, and to limit retrieval by language and/or
document type. Time periods for selection include the weekly update, the latest two weeks,
the latest four weeks, a specific year, or any number of years. Sorting options include:
relevance, date, first author, or source journal.
- Weekly updates
Weekly updates keep researchers current in the research literature and up-to-date on the
times cited information revealing the changing impact of their research and that of
colleagues and competitors.
- Critical data elements
Beyond the standard bibliographic data, each record in the citation databases offers
access to full-length author abstracts (when available in the science and social sciences
source material) and the author's bibliography (cited references). Additionally, ISI has
created data features which enhance search results including Related Records and KeyWords
Plus. With Related Records, researchers can find records that
share one or more cited references yielding additional relevant results. Keywords Plus
provides additional search terms and phrases drawn from an article's bibliography (cited
references).
- Data management options
Queries can be saved for researchers to modify and run against future updates allowing
researchers to follow a particular topic over time. Records may also be marked for
printing, document delivery (ISI Document Solution(SM))
or exporting directly into Reference Manager, ProCite,
or other bibliographic management software.
- Local holdings links
Organizations can indicate local holdings and link to a local Web-based OPAC system
(Innopac) to save on full-text retrieval costs.
- A gateway to related information tools:
- ISI Links
Users can seamlessly link to a publisher's full-text articles if the user is a mutual
subscriber to the Web of Science and the publisher's online journal service.
- ISI Chemistry Server(SM)
Provides access to the most versatile and comprehensive packages of chemistry information
available on the Web.
- ISI Document Solution
Users can order high quality full-text articles electronically.
- Reference Manager and ProCite
Researchers can easily export references and abstracts into bibliographic management
tools.
