Searching Compendex

Compendex provides indexing and abstracts of the world's engineering literature in all fields of engineering.  The database includes journal articles, conference papers and technical reports.  Sources for the records are from over five thousand journals, conference proceedings and reports.  As of the year 2000 there are over five million records in Compendex, with coverage starting from 1970.  The database is updated on a weekly basis.

Quick Search for Compendex

The Quick Search template allows for quick and easy searching.  Its functionality is expanded by the inclusion of online indexes.  Use of indexes is highly recommended for better search results.  Click on Index of Terms; select the Index; find the term; highlight it; then use Ctrl/c and Ctrl/v to paste the term into the search template.

Autostemming: The search engine autostems terms, to include possible variations of a term, and produces a list of records that match the search query.  Autostemming of search terms is the default in all fields without lookup indexes (i.e. autostemming of "manager" will also find "managers", "management”, and "managerial.").

The Village2 Interface is not case sensitive, so entering text in upper or lowercase is possible

Searchable Fields

Field searching allows the searcher to specify what parts of the record will be searched.  Select the field you wish to search by using the pull-down menu above each input box. Select either All Fields, Keywords, Author, or Publication Title.

Select the field from the “Search By:” pull-down menu.

·    Enter an exact match for the journal or conference, use a truncated form of the title, or use words from the title.

·     It is strongly recommended to select publication titles from the Publication Title Index and paste them into your search.

.

Field Name

Examples

Searching by Author

Smith, A.

Smith, A. B.

Smith, Arthur

Smith, Arthur B.

Metcalfe, b*

Metcalfe, r*

·   Enter last name first, comma, then a space, and the first name or initial.  Inputting just a last name by itself may retrieve more results than anticipated.

·    Truncate with an asterisk “*”. Use the truncation symbol "*" at any point, but be aware that many different authors have the same last name and first initial.

·   In creating a search for an author, be sure to include all variations of a first name. For example, Robert Metcalfe has published under Metcalfe, Robert M., Metcalfe, R. M., and Metcalfe, Bob.  In order to get every document in Compendex published by Robert Metcalfe, it is advised to search both.

·   Use of the Author Index is strongly recommended to search for authors and for variations in names.

·   Find the authors and past them into the search box.

Using Indexes of Terms

Use of indexes is strongly recommended to increase the quality of retrieval. Click on Index of Terms; select the Index; find the term; highlight it; then use Ctrl/c and Ctrl/v to paste the term into the search template. There are three Compendex indexes in Quick Search:

·         Ei Subject Terms Ei Subject Terms are arranged alphabetically, “Automobile windshields” precede “Automobiles”.  Click on Index of Terms; select Ei Subject Terms index; find the term; highlight it; then use Ctrl/c and Ctrl/v to paste the term into the search box with the field limitation of Keywords.

Note: When records are displayed in abstract form, Ei Subject Terms are hyperlinked. By clicking on an Ei Subject Term the system will retrieve records on that subject

·         Authors  – An alphabetical list of authors. An author is listed exactly as it appears in the document, although in inverted form. The author John A. Smith may appear as several variants (Smith, J. A.; Smith, John; Smith, John Arnold etc.) due to the fact that publishers have different conventions in presenting author names.  It is recommended to use the author index to browse the list of names for possible variations in naming, and to select all variations for the search.  Compendex lists an author's name as it appears in the publication.  If the publication lists the author's name in full, it will be listed in full in Compendex.  If the publication only provides initials for first and middle names, Compendex will only list initials.

Note: When records are displayed, author names are hyperlinked. By clicking on the author's name, the system will retrieve records by that author.

·         Publication Titles – An alphabetical list of Compendex Journal or Publication Titles. Click on “Index of Terms”; select Publication Title index; find the term; highlight it; then use Ctrl/c and Ctrl/v to past the term into the search template.

Expanding the search – adding more criteria to your search

To add search criteria click on the  button to add more search boxes and to access language and document type search limit options.

Find All and Find Any

After clicking on “Add Fields”, The ¤Find all” and ¤Find any” radio buttons under the search boxes will query the database to find records where all terms are present in the record or to find any of the terms in the record.

When the searcher clicks on  "Find all" it limits the search to records that include all terms.  For example, a search on "microcomputer chips computer aided design" requires that all terms are present in a record.

When the searcher clicks on "Find any" it broadens the search to records that include any of the terms.  For example, a search on "personal computer PC microcomputer" requires only that any of these terms are present in a record.
