The ComputerSelect Web
product is organized into sections, or subject areas, so that you can
better target your search quickly and with the best possible results
to reward your searching efforts. What you can expect to find in each
section is defined as follows:
|
The PRODUCTS section takes you directly to
information about products - product specifications and the subset of the articles content
that includes product reviews, announcements, buyer's guides, tutorials and technical
articles. All of the information available here is focused on a product(s). |
|
The COMPANIES section is where you go to find
information about companies. In this section you have access to company profiles and
articles that are focused on a company and its business practices which may include
mergers and acquisitions, contract activity, marketing, planning and happenings at the
organizational level. |
|
The SEARCH ALL section allows you to do just
that - search all of the content including the full set of articles, product
specifications and company profiles. This is where you want to start your search if you
know you want to retrieve every mention of your search criteria, or you're not sure what
you will find and just need to start somewhere. Results are grouped according to document
type (e.g. articles are listed separately from product specs) so you can browse through
them more effectively. |
|
The SEARCH THE WEB section allows you to
utilize Web content along with the other content available. Headlines from the Web gives
you instant access to the most current "front pages" of leading national,
business and high-tech news sources.
Search Web Sets allows retrieval of precise results from carefully selected
technology-related sites. These sites have been assembled into "Web sets"
focusing on specific information categories, such as news, stocks and specific facets of
the high-tech industry. Search results are more precise because only those sites relevant
to your questions are searched. |
|
The GLOSSARY section is where you can find
definitions to important computer and telecommunications terms by searching the latest
editions of the Computer Desktop Encyclopedia and Newton's Telecom Dictionary. |
Publications - ComputerSelect gives you access to
content from over 90 trade and industry publications along with computer and
telecommunications industry-specific coverage of major business journals and newspapers.
85% of the content is available with full-text. The following list gives you a title by
title listing of the article content and provides information on Gale's coverage of the
title, whether or not full-text is currently available, and the publisher's name.
Alphabetical Listing of Publications by Title
The content found in the more specific sections - Reviews, Technical Articles and
Articles on Company Activities - are logical subsets of the full articles database. Each
subset is defined at the article level. All of the content from this rich collection of
industry bibles, discipline-oriented magazines (Internet World, C/C++ Programer's Journal,
Health Management Technology) and trade press is indexed with terminology from Gale's
controlled vocabularies which include:
- company name
- product name
- product category
- topic
- publication name & date
- article type
- author
This indexing presents a powerful means for narrowing your search to articles that
focus on only your area of interest. Within the product, you will find a number of search
forms that allow you to create a very specific search by searching on one field or
combining many search criteria. All sets of indexing terms are easily accessed via pick
list dialogs.
Product Specifications - With access to specifications for approximately
43,000 software products and 22,000 hardware products, ComputerSelect offers the largest
directory of products from which to pick and choose. Products are categorized according to
type and function by a dedicated editorial staff to help make your product research and
comparison work that much more straightforward and easy to accomplish. Links within
product specification records to information on the manufacturer take you one step closer
to completing the purchase process by providing you with the necessary contact
information.
Each product specification sheet is filled with facts and figures detailing the product
and its compatibility in various environments. The information published is provided by
vendors from either returned surveys, technical manuals or manufacturer spec sheets and is
cross-indexed by product name, function and company name. The scope of product information
extends across many platforms and environments such as Windows NT and 95, UNIX, Macintosh
and NetWare.
The format for hardware specifications vary by category in order to supply the most
pertinent information for that product set. Software specifications include the product
release date, RAM requirements, source language and customer support options, as well as a
summarization of the product's functionality. Most of the specifications also include
manufacturer suggested list prices, sometimes more than one price if multiple licenses or
configurations are popular.
Web
Sets
ComputerSelect Web lets you take advantage of the best of the Web where
high technology information is concerned. Carefully selected
technology-related sites, vetted by experienced editors, have been
assembled into "Web sets" that focus on specific information
categories, such as news, stocks and specific facets of the high-tech
industry. You'll see immediately that your search results are
dramatically more precise because you'll be searching only those Web
sites most appropriate to your questions.
Dynamic Documents
ComputerSelect Web uncovers the "invisible" Web - many standard search engines
only search the top four layers of a site, often missing the most valuable information
buried deep in complex databases. Because the standard search engines cannot get to that
material, users typically have to visit each site after site, performing the same search
over and over to drill down far enough to get the results they need.
With a single search, ComputerSelect Web users can gather the same information as if
they had gone to many different Web sites, which is especially efficient for
dynamic-information searching - those queries you do over and over, such as stock prices.
ComputerSelect Web uses proprietary technology to search the full depth of pre-selected
sites, returning specific results that an ordinary search engine would never be able to
reach - let alone retrieve. The dynamic documents sourced by ComputerSelect Web offer
unparalleled precision.
Company Profiles - ComputerSelect offers general company profile and contact
information for approximately 11,000 computer hardware, peripherals, networking and
software manufacturers and vendors. You will not find every company in the industry listed
here, but you will find the ones who offer products that affect the computer tools and
technology side of today's business world.
The information published here is provided by the manufacturers themselves and checked
regularly for accuracy. Web addresses are provided where available, so you can go to the
source directly when you need additional information, have a particular question, or want
to transact a purchase on-line. The list of key officers is provided as an aid to
addressing the right individual in the organization should your contact needs be other
than that of purchasing a product or reaching technical support.
Glossaries - In conjunction with publishing partners the Computer Language
Company, Inc. and Miller Freeman Inc. ComputerSelect offers you access to two reknowned
glossaries of computer and telecommunications terminology:
|
Computer Desktop Encyclopedia |
|
Newton's Telecom Dictionary |
These two glossaries contain over 15,000 definitions of computer terms and concepts and
offer complete and comprehensible definitions. The glossaries can be searched either by
choosing from a list of available terms or by the full-text of the definitions. |
