Macmillan
and OUP in Grove agreement
The
Macmillan Group and Oxford University Press (OUP) agreed
the transfer of the Grove business to OUP with immediate
effect.
The
flagship Grove publications, The
Grove Dictionary of Art and New
Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, fit
extremely well with OUP's other leading copyrights, the Oxford
English Dictionary, the American
National Biography, Oxford
Reference Online, and the forthcoming Oxford
Dictionary of National Biography. Together they
form a collection of prestigious reference works that have a
distinguished history in print form and have moved
successfully into the online world.
Richard
Charkin, Chief Executive of Macmillan, commented:
"
We are delighted that we have been able to find such an
excellent home for Grove. We are confident that OUP will be
successful in nurturing Grove for the foreseeable future. I
would like to thank everyone who has contributed so much to
these marvelous
scholarly resources over the years."
Henry Reece, Chief Executive of OUP, said:
"The Grove dictionaries are works of scholarship of the
first rank. It is difficult to think of any other books or
products in the English language that have a better fit with
our reference publishing program than the Grove
publications. The Grove brand shares the values associated
with the Oxford name."
